The club has held a tournament nearly every year for approaching 100 years. In 2007 the Tournament was named
in memory of Nick Ashton a valued club member who died in that year and is sadly missed.
The club has 3 trophies :
The Ian Edwards Cup was donated to the club in 1937 by the parents of Ian Edwards a Phennards member
who was killed in World War II. This is currently awarded to the winners of the tournament and is engraved each year with
their names.
The Coronation Cup is thought to date from the coronation of George VI. This cup is awarded to the
tournament runners-up and engraved with their names.
The Nick Ashton Un-sung Hero Trophy is awarded to someone who has contributed behind the scenes to
the clubs activities and is awarded by the Committee.
Each year the tournament is keenly contested but is not too serious in the "you cannot be serious!" sense.
The rules tend to change over time with various handicapping schemes having been tried. We are still working on that
elusive mix that makes a level playing-field for all but can still be called tennis.
Despite adopting a variety of impenetrable handicapping schemes it seems you can't keep a good man (or
woman) down and the better players usually come through to win (despite our best endeavours to stop them).
The tournament is great fun and we try to give everyone a chance to win, stopping short of taking all
the tennis skill out of the mix. After the rigours of the day we usually relax with a barbeque and some welcome
thirst-quenching.
So please come along an join in ...........
